Exclusively from the United States of America. An interview with Sean Connors, a young talented.

Sean Connors

United States of America: Sean Connors and his fiddle.

Today we are talking to a 15 year old young man, who started playing the Irish fiddle when he was only 8 years old. I was struck when I heard him play in a video that was posted on You Tube: moved by his music, his young, handsome face, and the ability and joy with which he played the notes of an Irish melody. This young man, who was born in America.

The young artist Sean and his father Kevin, mother Isabel and younger brother Kealan, in front of their home in Oregon.

At this point I wanted to know a little bit more, I wanted to get to know him and let him be known. Sean lives in a small town of 34,000 inhabitants Grants Pass which is located in Oregon in the Northwest region of the United States (close to the border with California).
His mom Isabel is a very nice Dutch lady. His dad Kevin is American and loves to go fishing in the local rivers, in the midst of nature. His younger brother Kealan, who is 12 years old is a sweet blond boy with beautiful blue eyes. I can’t leave out the affectionate maternal grandpa who, despite his old age still packs his suitcase to go spend time with his family in America. Sean is a freshman at the local High School and this will be his first European interview. We hope it will bring him luck!

Sean, instead of doing your music exercises wouldn’t you rather go out and play with your friends?
Yes, sometimes I would, but I always find time to practice.

Was it your decision to play an instrument or did your parents encourage you?
It was my decision.

Why did you choose to play Irish music? Why do you like it so much?
When I first started I wanted to learn to play country music, like John Denver. He was my example, I always listened to him. In Seattle, where we used to live, we couldn’t find a teacher that would teach me how to play country music. Instead we found a teacher for Irish fiddle which I really liked a lot. So I decided to play the Irish fiddle.

You also study classical music at your High school. What do you prefer?
Without a doubt: Irish music. I study classical music so I can learn to read sheet music. Irish music I play by heart.
What does music represents to you? A dream, an emotional experience, an escape from reality, or…..
It lets me escape from reality and I enjoy myself playing the music that I love.

How would you define your character? Playful or maybe melancholic?
I think I am a little of both, and I do a lot of thinking.
When you play, what kind of emotions do you experience? Do you focus only on the notes or do you go into a special world of your own
I never think about the notes. I have to think of something else or I will “mess up”.

Another photo of the Connors’ family in their garden.

Your mom is Dutch and your dad is American. To which of these countries do you feel closer and similar when it comes to your character?
I am really close to both of my families although I get to see my American family a lot more.

Would you like to travel and have concerts all over the world?
Yes, so far I have had concerts in the state of Washington and Oregon here in America, but I think that it would be really cool to have concerts abroad.

Do you have any special projects for your future?
I will play at the Seattle Folklife Festival next year and I am also in the process of recording a CD with my friend and band member Daniel Carr.

Fantastic! Your first CD! I can’t wait to hear it! I have a difficult question for you: what would be your definition of the word ‘love’?That’s easy! I would answer you that love is when someone shows affection for another person.

In fact, it’s useless to search for other philosophical and complicated definitions….

Is your fiddle your most precious possession or do you have other things or people that are even more important to you?
My family is definitely most important to me.

Sean with his dear Dutch grandpa whom he loves very much.

Nice answer, Sean! I agree. Your family is by far the most valuable asset! So, I have one last question for you: if at this moment The Magic Box could make a wish come true for you, what would it be?
I would love to have the opportunity to play my music in a concert in Italy or in another country in Europe.

Let’s give our best and most affectionate wishes to Sean in the hopes that his wish might come true! And so … to help him get started, please visit his Facebook page and order his CD. Details on how to receive the CD will become available to you when it comes out. We will ask Sean to also include the song that he played for “The Magic Box” this last Christmas.
